This follows the restated determination of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that no member of Mali’s transitional government compete in the elections.
ECOWAS reached this decision at the Ouagadougou meeting of its contact group on Mali in early July and forwarded this to a process of national consultation in Mali for confirmation.
Earlier discussions by Malian political forces had already arrived at the same decision in April, but Malians are divided since interim prime minister, Cheick Modobo Diarra’s 31st October announcement of his intention to run for president. /IPS (END//2012)
