World toilet day breaking sanitation barriers

GENEVA - Organisers of this year’s World Toilet Day, marked today 19th November, are using the slogan “I give a shit – do you?” to break the silence around the crucial issue of sanitation. - They hope to remind the international community that 2.5 billion people around the world don’t have access to clean and private toilets.

Of the UN Millenium Development Goal targets for 2015, sanitation is the furthest off track.

Saskia Castelein, advocacy and communications officer at the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council blames the slow progress on the taboos surrounding the issue.

China is the country most likely to meet the goal on time and only three African countries – Botswana, Cape Verde and Angola, are on track. /IPS (END//2012)
