Bumper harvest for Senegal

DAKAR - Farmers in Médina Yoro Foula, in Senegal’s southern Kolda region, are expecting a good grain harvest this year, and hope to sell thousands of tonnes in the local and regional markets. - Aliou Badara Baldé, the mayor of Pata, a commune in Médina Yoro Foula said a 50 to 60 percent increase in grain production was expected.

This is despite difficulties linked to a lack of resources for smallholders, poor soil, and limited infrastructure to access farms.”

At national level, Senegalese minister for agriculture and rural infrastructure, Abdoulaye Baldé, said cereal production this year recorded an increase of 52 percent compared to the 2010/2011 season. /IPS (END//2012)
