INDIA - Increasingly, young Indian men are succumbing to socio-economic pressures and committing suicide.

Statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau show close to a 140 thousand people committed suicide in 2012, the majority of them men. Dr Sreelakha Nair, an independent researcher on social development issues, says men are still the primary breadwinners in the family and any obstruction in the situation can make them end their lives.

According to Rajeev Radhakrishnan from Yale University School of Medicine’s psychiatric department, Preventive strategies implemented at a community level may be more effective than global strategies to arrest increasing suicides. (END//2013)
