Latin America:
Femicides in Brazil Hit Civil War Proportions

Reprint | | Print |

RIO DE JANEIRO - The number of femicides in Brazil has reached civil war-like proportions. In just 10 years 40,000 women were killed in this country merely for being women.

A study by the Avante Brasil Institute found in 2010 alone, a femicide was committed every hour, 57 minutes and 43 seconds.

But activists say violence against women is broader than this and has other manifestations, such as psychological, economic, sexual or symbolic. (END//2013)
